Why did River Plate play with different numbers on their jersey?
"El Millonario" updated the typography of its squad numbers as part of an initiative for World Cup Down Syndrome Day, observed on March 21.
The action is part of the "Visible In" campaign, which promotes visibility and social equality worldwide, an initiative proposed by the Itinerarium Foundation in Spain.
The numbers were designed by Anna Vives, a Spanish artist with Down syndrome who created the typography in 2012. River Plate first utilized her design the following year during a match against Lanús.
Seven other clubs globally will join the initiative throughout March: FC Barcelona, FC Porto, Corinthians, América de México, Universidad Católica, Dynamo Kyiv, and Kaizer Chiefs.
