FC Barcelona and Real Madrid Could Take El Clásico Abroad
The match, scheduled for May, still does not have a confirmed venue due to scheduling conflicts with the stadiums that "Barça" usually uses.
Since 2023, Spotify Camp Nou has been undergoing renovations to increase its capacity to 105,000 spectators and modernize its facilities. The renovations were initially expected to be completed by the end of 2024, but delays have left the stadium unusable for now.
Barcelona has been playing home matches at the Estadio Olímpico Montjuic, which belongs to the city of Barcelona, requiring the club to request permission for each game. Recently, it was confirmed that they will use the stadium until matchday 33, two rounds before El Clásico. However, on the weekend of May 11—when the match against Real Madrid is scheduled—Montjuic will be occupied by a Rolling Stones concert.
Due to this issue, FC Barcelona is hoping that Camp Nou will be ready by May, making it their main option. However, according to The New York Times, the club is also considering the possibility of playing the match abroad, with Wembley Stadium in London and the Stade de France in Paris being the most likely alternatives.
If this happens, it would be the first LALIGA match in history to be played outside of Spain, something already common with the Spanish Super Cup, which is held in Saudi Arabia.
