Segundo Castillo sanctioned for Ecuador National Lottery campaign
The Barcelona SC manager was fined $50,000 by CONMEBOL for "ambush marketing."
Ambush marketing occurs when a brand associates itself with an event without being an official sponsor.
During Barcelona's CONMEBOL Libertadores match against River Plate, Castillo wore a pin promoting Ecuador's Lotto campaign, which encouraged fans to take photos and share them on social media - resembling the company's logo.
CONMEBOL regulations prohibit "any attempt by an unauthorized entity, brand, or individual to create an improper commercial association with CONMEBOL-organized tournaments."
The $50,000 fine will be deducted from Barcelona's television rights revenue.
