FIFA will implement the "Julián Álvarez Law" starting in 2027

World football's governing body modified regulations regarding release clauses in transfer markets.

Specifically, this involves a reform to Article 17 of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (RSTP). There will be new criteria to ensure that the amounts to be paid for a breach of contract are reasonable based on factors such as remaining seasons and the cost of replacing the footballer.

Although it will not carry the Argentine striker's official name, the new law is based on his case with Atlético de Madrid, as the club set his release clause at 580 million dollars—an impossible barrier to overcome for any team interested in signing him.

The regulation will come into force on January 1, 2027, just before the next transfer window. For players, it will mean new tools to manage their contracts, while clubs will have to apply other criteria when planning release clauses.
