CONMEBOL and CONCACAF sign a strategic agreement
The 2015 Copa América Centenario remained in the memory of the fans as the most important tournament that CONMEBOL and CONCACAF held jointly. With Chile as the winner, the possibility of seeing this tournament format again seemed impossible, but after meetings at the World Cup in Qatar, the Confederations once again generated synergy between the two.
Looking ahead to 2024, CONMEBOL and CONCACAF will jointly organize three tournaments, one of which will be completely new:
- The men's CONMEBOL Copa América will be played in the Concacaf region and will include all 10 CONMEBOL national teams and six invited Concacaf teams
- The Concacaf Gold Cup W 2024 will include eight Concacaf teams and four CONMEBOL women's national teams, as guests
- The confederations will create a new competition, with the participation of the best clubs in South America and Concacaf
Regarding this strategic collaboration agreement, Alejandro Domínguez, president of CONMEBOL mentioned: “CONMEBOL and CONCACAF are united by historical and affective ties. But above all, we are united by the passion, characteristic of all America, for soccer and sport. We are determined to renew and expand our joint initiatives and projects. We want this passion to translate into more and better competitions and for soccer and its values to grow and strengthen throughout the hemisphere. Without a doubt, both confederations believe in big and we will work with this orientation”.
