Vélez Sarsfield and the Story of Omar Asad's Toyota
Thirty years after winning the Intercontinental Cup, the club has recovered a unique prize from that tournament.
From 1980 to 2004, Toyota sponsored the Intercontinental Cup (now the Club World Cup) and held the naming rights, calling it the Toyota Cup.
In addition to the trophy awarded by FIFA, the Japanese brand gave two other prizes: the Toyota Cup to the winning team and its latest car model to the best player of the match.
In the 1994 edition, Vélez Sarsfield defeated AC Milan 2-0 in Japan, with a brilliant performance from Omar "El Turco" Asad, who was awarded a Toyota Celica.
Upon returning to Argentina, the Vélez squad decided to raffle the car and distribute the money, as they had previously agreed. However, the member who won it sold it, and the vehicle's whereabouts remained unknown.
In 2024, a club member finally found it for sale in the province of San Juan, and Vélez decided to buy and restore it for the 30th anniversary celebration of their world championship.
Today, the Toyota is displayed at "El Fortín" headquarters, next to the Intercontinental Cup trophy, available for club members to take photos with.
