The Huge Financial Gap Between the Champions of Brazil and Argentina
Vélez Sarsfield received a check for $500,000, the same amount that Estudiantes de La Plata earned for winning the Copa de la Liga last semester.
That figure is 15 times lower than what Botafogo received for winning the Brasileirão ($7.9 million) and is also surpassed by prizes in other South American leagues, such as those in Uruguay, Bolivia, or Chile.
The prize that Vélez obtained from the AFA is part of an annual $1 million incentive provided by CONMEBOL to federations to distribute among champions. In the case of Argentine football, this amount was split in half between the winners of the Liga Profesional and the Copa de la Liga.
