Real Madrid was forced to cancel concerts at Santiago Bernabéu
After more than a year of renovations and an investment of 1.25 billion euros, the stadium fails to comply with acoustic regulations due to a lack of soundproofing.
The club renovated the Santiago Bernabéu by installing platforms that retract into galleries beneath the stadium, allowing it to host events regularly without affecting the grass. However, they overlooked the detail of soundproofing the venue. As a result of constant complaints from Madrid residents, they were forced to suspend all scheduled concerts at least until the spring of 2025.
Faced with this issue, Real Madrid requested that Atlético de Madrid host the canceled events at the Cívitas Metropolitano Stadium, which would have provided a significant financial benefit to the “Colchoneros.” However, the answer was negative. According to the newspaper El Confidencial, Atlético’s reasoning was, "We do not organize large concerts during the season because the preservation of the pitch is sacred." While the Metropolitano Stadium has a capacity similar to that of the Bernabéu and is soundproofed, it lacks the retractable platforms that Real Madrid’s stadium has, meaning the playing field would be damaged.
Relations between the two clubs are not the best, partly due to refereeing controversies in recent derbies and the fact that Real Madrid has taken some players from Atlético’s youth academy, according to Mundo Deportivo.
Another problem Real Madrid faces is that production companies organizing these events, such as Universal Music or The Rock Entertainment, are being forced to refund ticket buyers who request it. As a result, these companies may seek compensation from the club for damages due to the cancellation of the events for failing to comply with regulations.
