Newell’s Old Boys names a new stand “Lionel Messi”
On Leo Messi’s 38th birthday, La Lepra announced through an emotional video that the newly constructed stand at their stadium will be named after the captain of the Argentine national team.
Newell’s shared the decision on social media with the phrase: “For the first time, two football legends share the same home: ours.” This comment refers to Diego Maradona, as another stand at the stadium is named after ‘El Pelusa’.
With this expansion, the Estadio Coloso Marcelo Bielsa will increase its capacity to nearly 50,000 spectators, making it the second-largest stadium in the interior of the country. The new “Lionel Messi” stand will hold 7,000 people and will debut at the start of the Torneo Clausura.
